Our little girl, Mary Elizabeth (age 7) began first grade three weeks ago in our neighborhood public elementary school. She has complete ACC with no other syndromes or neurological malformations. Her cognative and other testing in generally below age appropriate, but close to normal on a number of grade equivalent scales.
Up to this point, she has had a wonderful school experience - especially behavioraly - in Church Mothers Morning out, pre school and kindergarten. She has always been - and continues to be - a self assured, docile, compliant and eager to please little girl.
In the last two weeks we have begun to have consistent "bad behavior" reports at the end of the school day. Nothing destructive or mean, simply not obeying the teachers or refusing to do work.
Won't bother you will all the history/details, but my wife has poured herself into our little girl. She has been a TREMENDOUS advocate for our daughter and has done EVERYTHING possible to help her succeed...since birth.
Now it all seems for naught. What do you do??? We have worked so hard to get her in a mainstream classroom so she can be in an environment surrounded by "typical" children. We've even been blessed to have a "shadow" for her. Plus, she CAN do the work. It's heart breaking in a way, because she LOVED K-Garten SO much and was SO eager to begin first grade.
Have any of you found an effective way to discipline a first grader for bad behavior at school, or is it a mute point...time to concede to a special ed classroom?
Please feel free to share your experiences. We'll reciprocate as well, and respond to other postings on this site where we can offer some encouragement or relevent experience.
Many Thanks, Alex
